Timed again to International Women's Day Little girls dream big in this short film from Microsoft, talking about their passion for curing breast cancer, cleaning up the environment and bringing fresh water to the world. Doctors, inventors, entrepreneurs—it’s easy to envision these determined, articulate and thoroughly woke kids stepping easily into any of these roles. But hold up. The statistics say otherwise. Only 6.7 percent of U.S. women and 16 percent of women globally graduate college with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) degrees, the mini-movie tells its participants. Pulling no punches, it continues: “Odds are you won’t solve these problems.” The youngsters’ faces fall, and their resolve, it would seem, falters. Or does it? There’s no denying the impact of watching pre-teens full of promise and intellectual curiosity get smacked with brutal reality. It’s heartbreaking. And that’s no accident, according to Microsoft, which wanted to “inject a sense of urgency and scale” to this year’s #MakeWhatsNext campaign, dubbed “Change the Odds” and timed to International Women’s Day. The 90-second video, from m:united//McCann, sends out this plea: “Change the world. Stay in STEM.” In effect, it’s asking young women to buck the current system, recalibrate the numbers and make a mark in traditionally male fields. The girls in the video, as it turns out, are undeterred. “There’s always going to be someone who says you can’t do it. I think I can,” says one, while another declares, unequivocally, “I will discover a cure for breast cancer.” This is the third year of #MakeWhatsNext, with last spring’s video focusing on female inventors. Science-loving girls in the campaign could identify Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin and other famous inventors but came up empty when questioned about their female counterparts. Microsoft and m:united launched a series of digital shorts focused on specific women inventors and their work. For the new campaign, the brand kicks off MakeWhatsNext.com, a resource for girls interested in STEM that includes an experiential tool with LinkedIn that will show youngsters how to pursue their goals across industries and social causes. “Change the Odds” will run on broadcast TV and digital channels, and on social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter, with a new “conversational ad” on the latter.

The programme is designed to help latter-stage startups, which have received at least early series-A funding, have live products and users, and are growing. The important criteria is having products/services that solve problems in the startups home countries. “The idea behind this is we believe startups should target local problems, to help solve local problems and contribute back to their home country before expanding outside [it],” Yeow said. Thirty-one startups from multiple countries joined the Launchpad Accelerator programme this year. Wongnai is a platform to connect users to reviews on and information about more than 200,000 restaurants across Thailand.
Skootar is a booking platform for on-demand motorbike messenger and courier services for businesses. “We just started with Thai startups in 2017. It is good timing since the startup ecosystem in Thailand is really vibrant. There are a lot of opportunities here,” Yeow said. “Launchpad Accelerator is delicately designed for helping startup ecosystems which are still growing. The programme is designed to develop startup ecosystems. “We really want to continue this programme in Thailand. We run one batch per year. The next batch will be next year and it is possible that there will be more than two startups from Thailand joining it.” In general, the startups should thinks about how to use technology to solve local problems in each vertical areas. The programme lasts for six months. Two startups will join Google’s bootcamp in Mountain View, California, for two weeks. There the startups will meet mentors, Google’s internal team for both business and engineering, and startups in the same vertical areas. The programme is currently operating in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico) and Asia (India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines). There is a plan to expand it to other countries. As part of the programme, startups also receive equity-free support; two weeks of all-expense-paid training at Google headquarters in the heart of Silicon Valley; credits for Google products; public relations training; and global media opportunities. UNICEF launched today a new partnership with Microsoft Corp. to tackle the education crisis impacting children and young people affected by conflict and natural disasters, and to provide them with protection services. Under this partnership, UNICEF in collaboration with Microsoft and the University of Cambridge, are developing a ‘learning passport’ – a digital platform that will facilitate learning opportunities for children and young people within and across borders. The learning passport will be tested and piloted in countries hosting refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons. “Conflicts and natural disasters have disrupted learning opportunities and the quality of education for 75 million children and young people, many of whom have migrated across borders or been forcibly displaced,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “The learning passport is a great example of how we can use technological innovations to help the world’s future doers, thinkers and leaders – wherever they are and no matter the challenges.” Currently, many education systems in countries hosting refugees are struggling to acknowledge and recognize what refugee and migrant children and young people have already learned in school, making it impossible to provide them with the right level of education and, in the long term, limiting their employment prospects. “A digitally inclusive world starts with ensuring that all young people, no matter their situation, have access to a digital education,” said President of Microsoft Brad Smith. “This partnership is focused on creating scalable learning solutions to help millions of displaced and refugee children gain the skills they need to thrive.” Under the new partnership Microsoft and UNICEF will also develop new innovations to protect children and young people affected by emergencies, scaling up UNICEF’s digital child protection case management system. “This is a vital partnership, as bringing together committed partners such as Microsoft, who are willing to utilize their resources and expertise, will help to solve the biggest challenges for the world’s children,” said Caryl Stern, President and CEO, UNICEF USA. “All over the world, I have borne witness to the irreplaceable value education provides to children, especially to those who have had to leave their homes. Together, education and protection empower children to have a brighter future, and we look forward to seeing the impact of this powerful collaboration.” “This is a unique opportunity to work together to create a bespoke system of education that will help displaced children and young people fulfil their potential, and release their talents into a world that needs them,” Chief Executive of Cambridge University Press Peter Phillips.
